What Are Minimal Frame Pocket Doors?

A pocket sliding door is a panel that slides entirely into a cavity within the adjacent wall, rather than stacking against a fixed panel or wall surface. When fully open, the glass panel is completely hidden — the opening appears as if there was never a door at all.

Combined with minimal frame engineering (3/4" vertical interlocks and fully concealed perimeter frames), pocket doors represent the ultimate expression of glass architecture: when closed, you see only glass; when open, you see only space.

How Pocket Doors Work

The engineering behind pocket doors involves several coordinated systems:

Wall Cavity Design

The receiving wall must contain a cavity slightly wider than the door panel thickness, plus clearance for the track hardware. For minimal frame systems with 1-5/16" glass, the wall cavity typically requires 4-6" of depth. This can be accommodated within standard 2x6 framing or purpose-built steel stud assemblies.

Track System

Pocket door tracks extend the full length of the opening plus the full length of the pocket. For a 10-foot-wide panel pocketing into a wall, the track system spans approximately 20 feet total. The track must be perfectly straight and level — any deviation causes binding as the panel enters the pocket.

Panel Guidance

As panels enter the pocket, they lose the stability provided by the visible track section. Internal guide rails within the pocket maintain panel alignment and prevent lateral movement that could damage wall finishes.

Multi-Panel Pocket Configurations

For wide openings, multiple panels can pocket into walls on both sides of the opening. A 4-panel system might have 2 panels pocketing left and 2 pocketing right, creating a completely unobstructed opening when fully retracted.

This configuration is particularly powerful for indoor-outdoor living: a 30-foot opening with all panels pocketed creates a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces with zero visual obstruction.

Modern minimal frame pocket systems can accommodate panels exceeding 20 feet in height and significant widths. The limiting factor is typically the available wall length for the pocket cavity rather than the panel engineering itself.
