Thermally Broken vs. Non-Thermally Broken: What Architects Need to Know
The thermal break is the invisible detail that determines whether your door system meets energy codes, controls condensation, and maintains occupant comfort. Here's what you need to know.

What Is a Thermal Break?
A thermal break is an insulating material — typically polyamide (nylon) or polyurethane — inserted between the interior and exterior aluminum sections of a door or window frame. This barrier interrupts the conductive path that would otherwise allow heat to transfer directly through the highly conductive aluminum.
Without a thermal break, an aluminum frame acts as a thermal bridge: in winter, interior warmth conducts through the frame to the cold exterior; in summer, exterior heat conducts inward. This leads to energy loss, condensation, and discomfort near the glass.
Why Thermal Breaks Matter for Code Compliance
Modern energy codes — including California Title 24, IECC, and ASHRAE 90.1 — set maximum U-factor requirements for fenestration assemblies. In climate zones with significant heating or cooling loads, non-thermally broken systems often cannot meet these requirements.
The NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) provides third-party tested performance values. When specifying doors, always request NFRC-certified ratings rather than relying on manufacturer-calculated estimates.
Condensation Control
Beyond energy performance, thermal breaks prevent condensation on interior frame surfaces. When the interior surface of a non-thermally broken frame drops below the dew point, moisture condenses — leading to water damage, mold growth, and occupant complaints.
This is particularly critical in:
- Coastal environments with high humidity
- Cold climates where interior-exterior temperature differentials are large
- High-occupancy spaces with elevated interior moisture levels

- Tropical climates with minimal temperature differential
